How it all started
I want to give you the knowledge and advocacy skills needed to navigate the education system at affordable rates. Understanding your and your child’s rights and the special education process are powerful tools to get your school to listen to you and meet your child’s needs.
About Me:
As a special needs parent, like you, I had to learn about the school’s system and my child’s disabilities to figure out how to get the support he needed. An advocate was very helpful in guiding us with preschool eligibility and at home therapies and activities. When my son started kindergarten, I became a co-leader of the Middletown Special Education Parent Advisory Group. Enhancing school-parent relationships and connecting with and learning from other parents facing similar challenges were important to me. Since 2015, I have shared information with parents and collaborated with our district to resolve problems, recognize achievements, and increase inclusion. Together, we have improved special education programs, support, and policies for students, realizing this is an ongoing process.
My Qualifications:
I have completed the COPAA Special Education Advocate Training (SEAT) 1.0 and 2.0 classes and practicum working with a law firm. Over time, I have organized workshops and attended many special education seminars and conferences, such as those by Wrightslaw and SPAN, and continue to engage in professional development. My prior background includes environmental advocacy, teaching as adjunct professor, and science consulting work. The communication, research, and analytic skills that I have developed are essential for a special education advocate. I have a graduate degree from URI and a liberal arts science degree from Wesleyan University in CT. I am delighted to have the opportunity to meet you to discuss your concerns and child’s needs.
Code of Ethics:
I follow The COPAA’s Voluntary Code of Ethics for Special Education Advocates regarding:
• Ethical Principles
• Responsibilities to Client
• Conflicts of Interest
• Communication
